Michal, Victor and Victim

This is a fictitious account of Michal, daughter of Saul and wife of David. It is based on the scripture, but quotes, timelines, and actions described are for reading pleasure and not meant to be scriptural interpretation.
David was the latest hero in Israel. He and Saul had been fighting for years,. Each knew the time would come with David would take over the throne.
By now Saul hated David. How could he stop fighting with David and protect his throne? Then he had an idea. He offered his daughter, Mereb as his wife. How could David fight against his father-in-law?
His youngest daughter, Michal was madly in love with David. She stood silently watching as as her father offered her sister to the man of her dreams. What could she do? How could she watch her sister marry the man she loved more than life itself?

Michal spent many nights crying as she believed her sister would spend the rest of her life with the man she loved.
Suddenly, Saul changed his mind. Mereb was given to another in marriage. Michal literally jumped for joy. She dreamed of David again. She dreamed of the beautiful wedding they could have. She knew she would love him forever. Surely one day he would love her.
One day Saul heard the castle gossip. Michal was in love with David. Immediately Saul's scheming brain went to work. Let Michal marry David. She would make him happy at home and maybe David would stop trying to take the kingdom.
"I can't let Michal marry David. I can't stand the thought of one of my daughters being married to that power hungry show off." Saul said. "I know. I'll put a price on her that he can't possibly meet. Maybe if he died trying to meet my challenge, Michal would never know that I planned the entire thing."
King Saul called David into the throne room. "I would like to offer my youngest daughter, Michal for marriage."
"I don't know. You already backed out on me once."
"I'm not going to back out. But there is a price."
"Okay. What is it?"
"You must bring me the foreskin of 100 Philistines"
"What? Are you crazy"?
"You cut of the head of the biggest one, surely you can cut off something they don't need anyway."
"You don't think I can do it, do you?" David asked.
"I'm sure you can. Now hurry." Saul would say anything to get David away from the kingdom.
David then left castle determined to prove he was worthy of this task. He wasn't in love with Michal, but he hated to lose to Saul.
After David left the castle, Saul and his men had a wonderful laugh over David's cockiness. He'd never make it out alive. Soon Saul's troubles would be over.

To Saul's horror, David did make it. Somehow, David had managed to get the foreskin of 100 Philistines. Now he was trapped. Saul had to allow Michal to marry David.
David wasn't in love with Michal, but she did give him an advantage in the fight for the kingdom. Michal thought she loved him enough for both of them. Someday he would love her.
The wedding went as planned and the newlyweds entered their marriage bed with much anticipation. Michal anticipating a happy life and David anticipating a take over of the throne. David had been promised the throne by God, but he seemed to prefer to do things on his own timeline rather than wait for God.
The happy home went well for a while until Saul decided to have David killed. As usual nothing stayed a secret in the castle for very long. Soon everyone was whispering, "Saul has ordered David killed." They were whispering, but David was very good at sneaking around and hiding in small places. He overheard a lot of good information this way.
One day he heard two men talking. One said that Saul had ordered David killed before midnight that night. As soon as the two men were gone, David ran back to his apartment. "Michal, Michal." He called as he ran in the front door.
"What in the world is going on? What is all the excitement?" She asked
"Do you know what your father has done now?"
"What now?"
"He has ordered me killed before midnight tonight."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, do you think I'd take something like this lightly. I think there is a reward on my head."
"Go in the other room and wait until dark. I'll help you escape. You go by yourself. It will be faster. Then you send for me when it is safe."
"I'll go in the other room." Funny, David didn't say anything about sending for Michal.

When it was dark enough, Michal retrieved a huge basket from her storage room and tied a strong rope around it. She set it on the ledge of the window. "Get in." She told David.
"That won't hold me."
"Yes it will. Now hurry."
David sat in the basket as Michal's tears began to fall. "I love you so much. Please send for me as soon as it is safe."
"Okay. We have to hurry now." Again David said nothing of sending for Michal.
"I'll miss you."
"You'll be fine. Later. Now let the basket down."
Michal did as she was told, sure in her heart that the separation would only be temporary. She knew she didn't have time to sit and cry over her husband. She stuffed the bed with family treasures. Then took some goat's hair and placed it at the head of the bed. Then she covered the entire creation with blankets. The shape looked like a man sleeping.
At precisely 11:30 p.m. the soldiers were beating on the front door. Opening the door, Michal said in her sternest voice, "What do you want?"
"The king sent us for David." The captain said.
"Well you tell the king that David is ill and not to be disturbed."
"Yes, princess."
The soldiers reported to Saul what Michal had said.
"Well did you see him? How do you know he is sick? He's not sick. Go get him."
"That won't hold me."

The soldiers ran to Michal's apartment. This time they didn't knock politely. They burst through the front door like an explosion.
Michal was sitting on her sofa and nearly jumped out of her skin. She was too scared to say anything.
"The king has sent us to get David.
He is not sick." The captain yelled as his men trudged into Michal's bedroom. Throwing back the sheets, they discovered that David was not there.
"Where is he?" The captain yelled at Michal.
"I don't know."
When she refused to answer their questions, they took her to her father.
"Where is he?" Her father demanded.
Michal was a very intelligent young lady. She knew how to get to her father's heart. She started crying. "Oh, Daddy. I was so scared. If only you had been there. You could have helped. I'm never afraid when you are there. I was just so scaaaarrreed."
"Oh, my poor baby. What did he do to you.? I will have him killed if he hurt you."
"Oh no. He didn't hurt me. He just scared me. I helped him escape because I was afraid of what he would do."
"Well, let me know if he contacts you again."
"Oh, yes. I certainly will." Michal said on her way out of the room, knowing fully well that she would not betray the man she loved.

It had been months since David had left the castle. Not once had Michal heard from him. She had, however, heard about him. The rumor was that
David had taken another wife. Michal was crushed but what could she do. After grieving for several months she decided it was time to go on with her life.
One day her father sent word that someone else had asked for her hand in marriage.
Well I may as well. It doesn't look as if David is coming for me. I think he as forgotten all about me. Michal thought.
The wedding was beautiful and it wasn't long before Michal and her new husband fell madly in love. Michal was amazed at how wonderful life was with a husband who loved and cherished her. She had loved David with her whole heart, but she knew he merely tolerated her.

Michal had been happily married to Paltiel for several years. Their life wasn't perfect, but it was good. Then one day a servant brought Michal the news. David wanted her back. "Why would David want me? He hasn't sent for me in years. He knows I'm married. I can't go to him."
Then the truth came to her. Abner had promised to bring Israel over to David's side if they could make a covenant. David demanded that Michal be returned him before he made the covenant.
Soon Abner was at her door. "You are going back to David."
"I don't want to go to David. I'm married to Paltiel now and I want to stay with him"
"You don't have a choice. It is better for all of Israel if you go back to David."
"David doesn't love me."
"I don't care about love. I care about Israel. Now get your things."
Abner led Michal to where David was. Paltiel followed behind them crying for the wife he loved. Soon Abner could take it no more. "GO HOME!" He yelled to Paltiel. Although he didn't want to, Paltiel returned home without his wife.
When Michal was presented to David, there was no sign of affection shown. He informed them where she would be living and directed her there.

Michal was treated like an outsider by everyone in David's camp, including David. It was obvious from the beginning that David didn't call her to him because he loved her. She knew he didn't love her the first time they were together. Why did he call her back to him after she was happily married.
Michal sat in her apartment, missing her beloved husband and old life. She resented David for taking her from it. She had been a political move and meant nothing to David except as a pawn. She was basically a prisoner, allowed to go nowhere, no friends, no relatives, and for all practical purposes, no husband.
When David decided to move the ark of the covenant, it was an exciting day. People were in the street like it was a parade. David was so excited that he as dancing in the street. As Michal watched from her window, she saw David's tunic rise up and his manly parts were exposed. She noticed several young women swoon. She was not happy.
Michal had married her hero, was deserted by him, married a kind, respectful man, was taken back by the man that deserted her, ignored by him, and now watched as he acted like a male stripper in front of the entire nation. Michal could take no more.
She marched down to the street and demanded David's attention. "Do you know how you look, dancing like a drunken soldier?"
"I wasn't dancing like a drunken soldier, Michal. I was praising my lord. "
"Oh really? Don't our customs demand that you do that in front of the men only? Women and men are supposed to worship separately."
"Well, I'm the king and I chose to demonstrate my praise to my kingdom."
"Well young girls were swooning over your exposed genitals , thanks to you praising your lord."
"Well you know what, Michal? I'd rather have their admiration than yours. They mean a lot more to me than you do."
Michal ran to her apartment. She was appalled and embarrassed. Although he hadn't been her husband physically for years, she was still married to him and everyone knew it.
Within days, Michal heard a knock at her door. She opened it and was informed that David wanted to see her.
No one knows what happened to Michal after that. The Bible doesn't speak of her again. It is possible that David banished her to a site unknown. It is also possible that he had her killed. No one knows for sure. David is called 'a man after God's own heart,' yet he had a human side that was full of pride and arrogance. One of the question I will seek an answer to in heaven is 'what happened to Michal?'
